Troupes, soloists, small groups, first timers, all are eligible (although groups will take preference if we have an overwhelming amount of dancers)! Guest dancers (non-BDRaqs should aim for a song between 4 and 5 minutes max, BDRaqs performers should aim for a song 3-4 minutes max). Karim Nagi is an International Arabic Musician and Folk Dancer from Egypt and the USA. Because of his proficiency in both music and dance, his workshops deliver students to a new physical understanding of the connection between these two disciplines. As a dance and drum teacher, Karim has taught in dozens of festivals in the United States, Asia, Europe and Cairo, as well as all major Arab Culture festivals in the USA. Karim Nagi is a true crossover artist, uniting the Cabaret and Tribal, Traditional and the Modern, the Ethnic and the Urban. Amala is ecstatic and honored to bring Karim to Hawaii!

American Tribal Style belly dance is a celebration of feminine and evocative movements that are rooted in the earth. It has been designed to bring out the best in people of all ages, shapes and sizes. The dance is created through group improvisation using a common vocabulary of movements, steps and cues. ATS combines movement from folkloric inspired dances to a fusion of modern and ancient dance techniques from North India, the Middle East, Spain and Africa. Open to dancers and movers of all ages, genders and abilities.

What to wear/bring to the workshop: Full skirt or comfortable dance pants (no jeans or non-stretch pants), tank top or T-shirt, bare feet or dance shoes, a scarf to tie around your hips (no coin belts), water, pen and paper…and enthusiasm!

Dayl creates a great space in which to learn, injecting humour and encouragement in the class environment whilst catering to all learning styles. Dayl incorporates zills, sword, veil, flags, fire fingers, poi/fire poi, and fire lotuses in her performances, classes and workshops. She also facilitates mask making workshops working with dance related themes.

She appeared on stage with her troupe for the first time in April 1999 and has been performing and teaching ever since.  Dayl has performed with several professional troupes in Oklahoma (Gypsy Fire), Texas (Tribal Evolution, Wild Sky) and Sydney (Urban Turban, Urban Qabila, Tribal Spirit), and has studied in the USA and Australia, taking classes from Carolena Nericcio and Megha Gavin of Fat Chance Belly Dance, Jill Parker of Ultra Gypsy, Heather Stants of Urban Tribal Dance Company, Melusina of Underbelly, Rachel Brice of Indigo, Sue Erokan, Morocco, Devi Mamak of Ghawazi Caravan and Hilary Cinis of Sydney Tribal Bellydance.

Learn the joyful folk dance of Nubia, where Egypt’s own performance groups thrive, with one of the very few dancers in Hawaii who has perfected this beautiful dance and preserved it’s authenticity. Amala’s background of various belly dance styles surpass basic steps and reach deep into the culture, history and eclectic music. She is eager to share fun combos emulating movements of her favorite animals in one of her original choreographies while sharing Nubian instrumentation, rhythm and costuming.
Some dance experience recommended and all dance styles are welcome!
Hand-outs and music are provided.
Please bring a veil and a headband, scarf or hair pins to somehow attach the veil to your head so that we can use them as tarhas to dance with!
