American Tribal Style® belly dance is a celebration of feminine and evocative movements that are rooted in the earth. It has been designed to bring out the best in people of all ages, shapes and sizes. The dance is created through group improvisation using a common vocabulary of movements, steps and cues. ATSâ combines movement from folkloric inspired dances to a fusion of modern and ancient dance techniques from North India, the Middle East, Spain and Africa. For more information about ATSâ, please visit http://fcbd.com/about/

Your instructor, Dayl, will teach a simple choreography based on ATS® movements. You’ll learn several of the basic moves on which to build your repertoire!

Open to dancers and movers of all ages, genders and abilities.

What to wear/bring to the workshop: Full skirt or comfortable dance pants (no jeans or non-stretch pants), tank top or T-shirt, bare feet or dance shoes, a scarf to tie around your hips (no coin belts), water, pen and paper…and enthusiasm!

About Rowan:
With more than 25 years of experience with cultures and drumming of the Middle East and Mediterranean, Rowan Storm is recognized internationally as a performer and educator. Rowan brings freshness to tradition with her teaching method and frame drum designs, including the Thinline Frame Drums by Remo and her signature Rowan Storm Dayereh by Cooperman, now also produced by Remo.

Throughout the US, Europe and the Middle East, Rowan has studied and performed with some of the greatest masters of Middle Eastern music. Maintaining a full international concert and workshop schedule, Rowan plays and teaches a wide vocabulary of drumming styles, and sings in several languages.

The frame drum is the oldest documented instrument, used primarily by women for millennia in the Middle East and Mediterranean. In addition to its traditional use for rites of passage, singing accompaniment and musicality, Rowan Storm is pioneering a new approach to the frame drum. As the non-dominant hand (and corresponding feminine principle) is released from its supporting role and begins to share creative leadership with the dominant hand (and male principle), we summon and integrate dormant capacities of both brain hemispheres.

With the narrow frame and light weight of Rowan’s Thinline Frame Drum by Remo, Symmetrical Frame Drumming promotes balanced partnership between the rational and intuitive, feminine and masculine, linear and holistic perception. As a daily practice, we gradually open the door to vast untapped resources of wellness and creativity. You can view Rowan’s teaching method videos at http://www.rowanstorm.com/teaching-method-videos.html.

Invoking Inspiration
In this workshop we will discuss several techniques that help to develop your point of view as a dancer. A how to guide to: injecting YOU in your dance! Lets take a journey of self discovery into finding your inner voice as an artist, what inspires you, what moves you, and what is it about dance that keeps you going? Treasuring the little bits of inspiration and learning what to do with it. Learn tips for nurturing habits that foster your creativity and the importance of developing a home practice. We will then transition into the movement section of the class in which we will learn how to create a basic structure for improvisation. Structured improvisation is a great tool for dancers new to solo work to feel supported on stage and eliminates the pressure to create a whole choreography for a solo. Please bring a notebook.

February
Time and Location TBA
Mastering Manipulations
In this workshop we will discuss the 16 ways to manipulate a motif as stated in the Intimate Act of Choreography by Lynne Anne Blom & L. Train Chaplin. We will then learn a short and simple choreography and explore the many ways to manipulate it! Be prepared to stretch time, play with force and tempo, add embellishments, and more! Most importantly this is a class for you to be creative and have fun adding your own ideas to the structure I give you. This is a great class for students who have worked with manipulations before and students new to the work. Please bring a notebook.

March
Time and Location TBA
Going Mental for Musicality
Musicality is the art of connecting your movements to the rhythm, melody, and mood of the music. In this class we will explore exercises to increase your awareness of music and analyze the many choices you have to interpret the music with your body. Participation in “Mastering Manipulations” would be helpful but not mandatory to take this class. Developing a good sense of musicality will help you build compelling, impressive, and attractive dances, adding variation to your movements and keeping your dance from looking flat. Please bring a note book.
